VANCOUVER, Canada / SHENZHEN, China — July 3, 2026 — Over the past three years, generative AI has transformed how children find answers. But a more fundamental question has remained unanswered: AI can help children get answers — can it help children build the brain that produces them?
Today, that question has its first answer from a randomized controlled clinical trial.
Meowsprout today announced that BrainArk®, its proprietary AI-powered learning-capacity training system, has completed an international randomized controlled trial (RCT), with findings published in the Journal of Intelligence, a Q1 international academic journal. The study confirms that after just six days of training, children showed significant improvements in working memory and inhibitory control — and, for the first time, a significant transfer effect to exact mathematical calculation.

Answering the “Efficacy Paradox” That Has Divided Cognitive Science for Two Decades
Whether working memory training can transfer to real-world learning ability has been one of the most contested questions in cognitive science for nearly twenty years. A large body of research shows that training improves performance on the trained tasks themselves — but those gains have consistently failed to carry over into genuine learning contexts. The field calls this the “Efficacy Paradox.”
BrainArk was built precisely to take on that paradox — with an AI-adaptive architecture and a rigorous experimental design.on.
Study Design and Key Findings
The research team recruited 89 school-age children and randomly assigned them to a BrainArk IA-WMT training group, an active control group, or a passive control group. All children completed standardized cognitive and academic assessments before and after training.
After six consecutive days and a cumulative 240 minutes of training, the training group showed systematic cognitive gains:
- Significant improvement in working memory, spanning both the visuospatial and verbal domains;
- Significant improvement in inhibitory control, with robust gains in this core executive function;
- Significant improvement in exact mathematical calculation — establishing, for the first time, positive transfer from foundational cognitive training to academic ability.
This means AI-driven cognitive training is no longer confined to “you improve at what you practice.” It is beginning to reach the cognitive machinery that underlies learning itself.
The Technology Core: The NeuroAI Training Framework
BrainArk is not an AI learning assistant. It is a NeuroAI training system built at the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. The paper introduces the Integrated Adaptive Working Memory Training (IA-WMT) framework, which integrates the three core executive functions — working memory updating, inhibition, and shifting — into a single system. AI-adaptive algorithms keep training intensity continuously anchored at each child’s “edge of ability,” effectively engaging the brain’s plasticity mechanisms.
What BrainArk trains is not memory itself, but the brain architecture that supports memory and learning.
From AI for Answers to AI for Brain Development
Generative AI has redefined access to knowledge. Brain Development AI is redefining the plasticity of ability. Meowsprout believes the core educational advantage of the coming era will not be a child’s fluency with AI tools, but the foundational cognitive capacities needed to thrive in an AI-driven world: working memory, attention control, executive function, and cognitive flexibility. These capacities are the infrastructure of lifelong learning.
Dr. Hao Li, co-founder and chief scientist of Meowsprout and corresponding author of the study, said: “In recent years, AI’s greatest breakthrough has been helping people get answers faster. Over the next decade, its greatest breakthrough will be helping people build stronger minds. BrainArk’s clinical validation points to an entirely new path: from AI for Education to AI for Brain Development. This moment doesn’t belong to Meowsprout alone — it marks the beginning of a new era for the entire AI-powered children’s education industry.“
